Tutor/Mentor Off-Campus Work Study
The IU K-12 Student Success Corps located in the Family School and Neighborhood Engagement unit is a tutoring, mentoring, college & career exploration, and family engagement program that is hiring tutor/mentors for the 2024-2025 academic year. This tutor/mentor position supports elementary students academically and socio-emotionally in off-campus community centers in Indianapolis. The starting pay is $13.00. The hours are after school between 3:00pm-6pm with flexibility for scheduling around classes and other commitments. This position is for team players that want to positively impact the lives of local youth.

Students of all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Tutoring, mentoring, family engagement, and outreach services will be provided in-person, travel is required to locations which will likely be no more than 15-20 minutes from the IUI campus.
Please note that this position is an off campus assigned position and DOES NOT meet the allowable work standards for F1 and J1 student visas. Before applying, make sure you are qualified and eligible to work off-campus. Please be reminded that not all students are allowed to work off-campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide academic (Reading/Literacy support) and socioemotional (mentoring) support to elementary students in community centers.
- Provide college and career readiness support to students which can include discussions about future job choices and career opportunities for families to engage in panel discussions and community events.
- Daily, tutors/mentors will record data from each tutoring/mentoring session with students in the data management system paying attention to details with descriptive notes and observations.
- Actively engage and positively contribute to the community.
- Maintain professional attire, communication, and behaviors as a representative of the IUI Office of Community Engagement.
- Attend all scheduled meetings and monthly professional development sessions.
- Respond to emails, text messages, evaluations, and other communications within 24 hours of receipt.
- Always maintain confidentiality of student data, behaviors, and information.
- Take the initiative to build relationships with students.
- Perform other duties as assigned (i.e., staffing outreach tables on and off campus, data input, and translating documents.)
Qualifications:
- Able to work collaboratively with elementary students, educators, family members and staff of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Able to work a set schedule of up to 10-15 hours each week.
- Commit to at least 1 semester.
- Must be patient, empathetic, and willing to try new ways of engaging and supporting students’ growth and learning.
- Capable of recording notes from tutoring/mentoring sessions into the data management system, engaging with a payroll system, and completing other tasks with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to communicate promptly with remote supervisors via text, email, and other methods of communication.
- Skilled in problem solving and communication (verbal and written).
- Able to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with others including students, school and community center staff, and IUI staff.
