$64,714 - $103,542 Annually

The New Mexico WIC Program, Department of Health and Family Health bureau safeguards the health of nutritionally at-risk low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infant, children and seniors by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, nutrition information for healthy eating, health counseling, breastfeeding support, nutrition classes, cooking classes, and referrals to health care providers and social services.

Why does the job exist?

 

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the NM WIC State Nutrition manager with day to day operations such as; work with  regional WIC staff on determining their training and nutritional resource needs, approving formula requests statewide, assess potential  WIC food items and added them to the NM WIC approved foods list, and train staff on nutrition topics as required by FNS.   In addition, this position provides nutrition education and information on healthy eating, health counseling, nutrition classes, cooking classes, referrals to healthcare providers and social services, and outreach activities.

The most challenging aspect of this position is meeting the needs of staff in five different regions, as well as one contract agency. One of the toughest problems facing this position is being able to balance the needs of regional staff with other WIC state office projects.

How does it get done?

 

Develop staff and client nutrition materials 
Assist with formula approval
Assist with dropship formula emails/calls
Train staff on health/nutrition topics required by FNS and staff needs
Lead the Nutrition Task Team ( NTT) group
Oversee the WIC social media and websites
Review food requests from manufacturers
Enter new foods/UPC into WIC system
Assist with system testing

WIC families, staff support, Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), community partners.

Ideal Candidate

 

Preform duties that include implementing directives sent out by Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) under the WIC grant, Program development, train staff on Nutrition counseling skills, review new foods for food packages, create and manage Food Brochure, manage the WIC Management Information Systems (MIS) food package section, manage formula orders and recalls, collaborate with community organizations and have an education background and experience in the development of educational and training resource. Experience in entering and retrieving data from multiple information systems including the New Mexico Women, Infants & Children Program Automated Data System; create and/or coordinating nutrition education materials;  collaborating and coordinating with other organizations within the community.

Minimum Qualification

 

Bachelor's degree in a social, community, health, education, or nutritional field and four (4) years of experience in WIC or other experience in food service, dietetics, or other health field, and one (1) year of management experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

 

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
