Broadcast Engineer
Position Overview
WBRZ is seeking a skilled and proactive Broadcast Engineer to join our technical team and ensure the seamless operation of broadcast equipment and systems. The Broadcast Engineer will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware and software critical to our on-air operations, including studio equipment, transmission systems, and IT infrastructure. This role is ideal for a technically proficient individual passionate about broadcast technology and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, maintain, and repair broadcast equipment, including cameras, switchers, servers, and automation systems.
- Monitor and maintain the station's transmission systems, including RF systems, antennas, and microwave links.
- Troubleshoot technical issues to minimize downtime and ensure uninterrupted on-air operations.
- Collaborate with the operations and production teams to support live broadcasts and special projects.
- Maintain IT infrastructure, including servers, workstations, and network systems used in broadcast workflows.
- Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and station policies related to equipment and broadcasting standards.
- Maintain detailed documentation of equipment inventory, maintenance schedules, and system configurations.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to recommend and implement upgrades or improvements.
- Provide technical support during breaking news, severe weather, or other high-pressure situations.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to after-hours technical emergencies.
Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering, RF, IT, or a related field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of broadcast systems, including video, audio, RF, and IP-based technologies.
- Experience with automation systems (e.g., Crispin, Imagine) and video servers (e.g., Harmonic, Avid) a plus.
- Familiarity with FCC regulations and compliance requirements.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Physical ability to lift and move equipment and work in confined spaces when necessary.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
