Interpretation and STEM Education Program Development Position

Pay: $17.40/Hour
Position Description:
Camp Nelson National Monument is a newly created unit of the National Park Service. This internship will provide opportunities to work within and learn about how the NPS interprets and provides information at Civil War to Civil Rights site. This internship will also be a unique opportunity to be involved with building the park Education Program and the STEM opportunities at a new NPS site. Additionally, this internship will also be a chance to conduct research needed to advance the understanding and interpretation of Camp Nelson National Monument and its natural resources.
Projects include but are not limited to the following:
• Orientation to the NPS Mission and how that mission is achieved at Camp Nelson NM and other unites of the NPS.
• Orientation and training on visitor services operations including the Visitor Center, Museum, and Reconstructed Barracks, and conducting guided programs on the grounds.
• Collaborating with park Division Chiefs and Lead Ranger to propose, draft, create and implement curriculum-based STEM youth programs.
• Develop digital media for park website, social media, and printed publications that focuses on cultural and natural resources of the park.
• Assisting in the development of Park Podcast
• Engage with visitors at special events and programs.
• Participate in off-site internship and career fairs with park staff.
Mentoring:
The intern will take part in a comprehensive new employee training led by NPS staff at the start of their program. NPS staff will schedule weekly meetings and check-ups with the intern during the summer. NPS Supervisor will provide a written performance review at the conclusion of the internship.
Qualifications:
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired: (Note: qualities are desired but may not be required)
• Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in history, public history, museum management, education, or work with youth.
• Excellent customer service and communications skills
• Desire to work with youth audiences.
• Experience in public speaking and visual and social media communications.
• Interest in interpretation, education, or museums
• Knowledge of technology, including digital cameras, digital recorders, microphones, SD cards, video, and photo editing, etc.
• Knowledge of Microsoft products, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.
• Knowledge of subject matter, including Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, segregation, and the early civil rights movement
• Dependability and punctuality
Additional qualifications:
• Must be able to pass a federal background check.
• Must be between 16 and 30 years of age.
• Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
• Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an HBCU (Historically Black College or University)
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed indoors. The job may entail prolonged standing or walking, including leading guided tours of the park grounds. The position will require the physical ability to work in all weather conditions and perform some light lifting (<50lbs).
Additional info:
This position would have access to Adobe programs such as Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, as well as park Canva application.
Any skills with graphic design, sound design, photography and videography are also highly valuable for this position.
