Come join the Peer Advisor team for IU Indianapolis! Peer Advisors help students transition to the university, master basic academic processes, act as a referral source, and offer a complementary point of view to advisor perspectives.
Peer Advisors can choose one of three commitment options (see below). We'll ask you about your commitment preference during the interview.
- Summer only: May 13-August 22, 2025
- Academic Year only: August 14, 2025-May 8, 2026
- Summer + Academic Year: May 13, 2025-May 8, 2026
Peer Advisors are expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week across at least two days and attend all training and paid weekly meetings. All hours scheduled will accommodate your classes and will be Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Peer Advisors are required to work no more than 29 hours per week across all on-campus positions.
Federal Work Study is gladly accepted, but not required to apply.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide drop-in advising services to University College students, both in person and online:
- Support students with searching for classes, building a schedule, and enrolling.
- Advise students making mid-semester schedule changes and those needing to withdraw from the university.
- Guide students through various online tools and resources to help them explore majors, minors, certificates, specific degree requirements, and career opportunities.
- Assist students with the completion of various university forms.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of student meetings in the Advising Records (AdRx) system.
Provide front-line service to students, staff, and guests, in person, online, and on the phone:
- Offer guidance on university policies, procedures, and deadlines.
- Provide information on campus resources and refer students appropriately.
- Assist students with navigating university technology.
- Manage advisor calendars, schedule appointments, and check students in for meetings.
- Maintain the overall operation and organization of the front desk and lobby areas.
Support ACD outreach, programs, and special projects:
- Lead office outreach initiatives to support and guide students demonstrating low Canvas engagement, receiving negative SER feedback, or who need an advising meeting or registration assistance for the upcoming semester.
- Manage and respond to student inquiries through the advising email account.
- Represent ACD at various campus events, including orientation, Weeks of Welcome, open houses, career events, and prospective student visits throughout the year.
Attend and actively engage in all training and weekly staff meetings.

Through their work, Peer Advisors develop a wide-range of knowledge and skills, sought by employers and transferable to a variety of career fields. Students in this role will gain the ability to:

Required Qualifications:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Working knowledge of university email, Canvas, Student Center, and class registration process.
- Skill in problem solving and communication (verbal and written).
- Ability to conduct self in a professional manner and embrace the diversity of all colleagues, students, and guests.
- Ability to listen actively and ask questions to determine the needs of students and guests.
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with other staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with student educational records.
