Community Engagement Intern

Background

The National Public Housing Museum is the only cultural institution devoted to telling the story of public housing in the United States. Our mission is to preserve, promote, and propel the right of all people to a place where they can live and prosper— a place to call home.

Our permanent home is under construction at the last remaining building of the 1930s WPA-era Jane Addams Homes in Chicago’s Near West Side and will open to the public later this year.


Community Engagement Intern Overview

The National Public Housing Museum seeks a dedicated and enthusiastic Community Engagement Intern to support our mission of preserving and sharing the stories of public housing residents. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on impactful projects that explore social justice, housing history, and community engagement. The intern will assist in various aspects of museum work, including research, content development, program support, and community outreach.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and facilitating museum programs and workshops.
  • Contribute to community engagement initiatives, including resident storytelling and outreach.
  • Document and organize research and program materials.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate on upcoming projects.

 

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Interest in public history, social justice, or museum studies.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with digital content tools 
    (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or social media platforms) is a plus.

 

Compensation

$20.00 per hour

 

INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

Internship Period: June 4 – August 7

Total Weeks: 9 weeks

Work Hours per Week: 28 

Total Hours: 252

Workdays: 4 days per week, Mondays—Thursdays, 10AM–5PM, Onsite

 

PROGRAM DAY:

On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

These hours are separate from the internship hours.
