Emergency Management Specialist Intern

 

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, responsible for supporting EOC Team/DECO with planning, coordinating, and assisting the response and recovery to natural disasters, emergencies, and critical incidents to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public, state property, and environment. Conducts research and coordinates input from various sources to design and/or maintain emergency preparedness plans to minimize impact on communities.  This role requires quick decision-making, leadership, and the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders, including local governments.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Emergency Planning and Preparedness:

 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive emergency plans and procedures. Review and make recommendations to exciting plans and procedures.
  • Conduct risk assessments and vulnerability analyses to identify areas of potential risk and ensure appropriate preparedness strategies.
  • Organize and participate in emergency drills, simulations, and training exercises for operation centers and community partners.

 

  1. Emergency Operation Center:

 

  • Operate as a liaison between FDOT and local agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Mobilize and manage emergency response teams, providing guidance and direction during incidents.
  • Manage resources to ensure effective response and recovery efforts.
  • Facilitate the deployment of necessary emergency equipment. 

 

  1. Recovery:

 

  • Assist with recovery efforts, including damage assessment, debris operations, resource allocation, and WebEOC missions.

 

  1. Collaboration and Networking:

 

  • Develop strong relationships with local, regional, and national emergency management organizations, public safety agencies, healthcare facilities, and other stakeholders. 
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and conferences to stay informed on best practices.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

 

  • Leadership and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for engaging with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of emergency management principles, disaster response strategies, and recovery operations.
  • Experience in coordinating multi-agency response efforts and managing resources.
  • Ability to work under pressure, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and prioritize tasks efficiently.

 

Education and Experience:

Enrolled as a student and working on obtaining a Bachelor's degree or Masters degree in emergency management, public safety, homeland security, or a related field (required).

Have an understanding of the NRF, NIMS, ICS, and COOP.

Experience with community outreach and public speaking is an asset.

Working Conditions:

May require working outside of regular business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on emergency events.

Work may involve physical demands, including travel to disaster sites, managing emergency equipment, or working in challenging environmental conditions.
