Position: Wildlife Intern, Summer Camp, Education Department
Employment Status: Part Time, Hourly, $12.50 per hour, Seasonal: May 19-August 8, 2025
Job Summary:
HMNS has earned thereputation for being one of Houston’s top summer enrichment experiences, with a robust catalog covering a wide range of science topics that are geared forchildren ages six to twelve.
Playing a critical role in the summer camp experience is the Wildlife Intern who is responsible for coordinating and facilitating animal presentations for Summer Camp and Scout classes, which serve over 100 children (ages 6-12) each week. This position requires the care and handling of a number of animals, including exotics and invertebrates including reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, fish, marine invertebrates, insects and arachnids.
This internship also provides the opportunity to learn about and participate with other aspects of the Youth Education Programs Department’s summer programming. This position reports to the Live Animal Program Facilitators.
This is a part-time position: 25-30 hours per week (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.), May 19-August 8, 2025.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily care of a wide range of small native and exotic animals including feeding and handling animals and cleaning habitats
- Maintain a sanitary and organized animal facility
- Maintain accurate records of animal care and observations
- Maintain classroom and exhibit hall aquaria and terraria
- Present wildlife talks to small groups of summer camp students using live education animals
- Participate in provided onsite training
- Purchase animal food and supplies which may require the use of personal vehicle (mileage and expenses reimbursed)
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Organized
- Reliable
- Works well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Takes initiative when necessary
- Experience caring for a wide variety of animals, not just mammals
- Interest in youth education, particularly in a museum setting is preferred
- Experience in public presentations is an advantage
Requirements:
- Comfortable handling live animals including snakes, lizards, frogs, mice, cockroaches
- Able to lift and carry 40 pounds
- Able to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Able to ascend and descend stairs and ladders
- Arrive to work on time
- Access to reliable transportation to perform the functions of the job
- Comply with the museum’s health and safety protocols
- Eligibility Restrictions: Family members of current or former employees or board members of the Houston Museum of Natural Science are not eligible for this internship.
