Assistant City Engineer
General Description
The purpose of this class within the organization is to assist in directing the activities of the Engineering Department, performing highly responsible engineering work of an administrative and technical nature. This role involves managing engineering services, coordinating with other city departments, outside agencies, and the public, and acting in the absence of the City Engineer.
Essential Functions:
Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the business.
Oversee the design, construction, and maintenance of public works projects, including roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.
Assist with the administration of contracts with design consultants and monitor their performance on capital improvement projects.
Direct and supervise engineering staff.
Participate in the development and execution of city policies related to engineering and public works.
Work with other city departments, outside agencies, and the public on engineering matters.
Assist in the preparation of the capital improvement plan and the annual budget.
Resolve complex engineering problems and provide technical guidance on projects.
Ensure projects comply with local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
Additional Duties:
Performs other work as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Tennessee, or the ability to be licensed within six (6) months of hire. Requires six (6) years' experience as a civil engineer.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Requires a professional engineering license. Must have a valid driver's license.
