Bureau of Forensic Services Intern (College) - Unpaid

Are you looking for an internship in the exciting world of forensics? The Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Forensic Services is seeking undergraduate and graduate students looking for Summer 2025 internship opportunities in the field of forensic services. This Unpaid College Internship Program is designed to offer an opportunity for college students to learn about the daily operations of a public forensic science laboratory. You will be actively engaged in purposeful, experiential activities which will include hands-on work assignments, participation on team projects, attendance at training sessions, and educational events. This structured mentoring and exposure to different networks will not only help you gain knowledge and skills in the forensic fields, but also provide a deeper understanding of our agency's mission, values, and the culture of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This hands-on experience will be invaluable in your future career development and growth.

 

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the evaluation of commercial test kits for the detection of urine. Through this project, you will learn about the importance of accuracy and reliability in testing procedures, as well as the impact of variable conditions on test results. This experience will service as a solid foundation for future validation plans and will enhance your understanding of the scientific research process. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to be exposed to various forensic disciplines, evidence management, court proceedings, expert testimony, and the professional interactions forensic practitioners have with law enforcement officers and officers of the court. 

Work Schedule and Additional Information: 

  • Part-time internship (up to 22.5 hours per week)
  • The internship will last approximately 8 weeks.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Tuesday - Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

Current enrollment in an accredited Bachelor's degree program (or higher)

Must have satisfactorily completed 60 credits, including 12 credits in chemistry

Enrolled in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or related physical or natural science program

Must be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher)

Must be available to participate in the 2025 Internship program for approximately 8 weeks throughout the summer


 

Additional Requirements:  

You must possess a valid driver's license (Interns at their expense, may be required to drive their personal vehicle to their assigned work location).

You must be able to perform essential job functions. 


Legal Requirements: 

  • Applicants shall have no adult criminal conviction graded Misdemeanor 2 or higher under PA Title 18 (or its equivalent for out-of-state and federal convictions).
  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
