Special Education Teacher

Job Title: Special Education Teacher

Location: Union City New Jersey
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Start Date: Immediate (2024-2025 school year & 2025-2026 school year)

Job Summary:

The Special Education Teacher will work closely with students who have a range of disabilities, providing individualized instruction, support, and resources to help them succeed academically and socially. This role requires a commitment to fostering an inclusive classroom environment, collaborating with other educators, and working with parents and support staff to ensure each student's unique needs are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with special needs.
  • Provide direct instruction to students with disabilities in a variety of settings, including one-on-one, small group, and whole-class.
  • Monitor and track student progress, adjusting instruction and interventions as necessary.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and administrators to ensure that students are receiving the appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Implement behavioral intervention strategies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques, to support students’ academic and social development.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ progress and documentation of IEP meetings, assessments, and communications.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers to provide updates on student progress and collaborate on strategies to support success both in and out of the classroom.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that promotes students’ self-esteem and independence.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in special education and behavior management.

Qualifications:

  • Certification: Must hold a valid New Jersey Special Education certification (or be willing to obtain certification).
  • Experience: Experience in special education is preferred, especially with students who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. Experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a plus.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of individualized education plans (IEPs) and educational assessment techniques.
    • Ability to implement behavioral interventions.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Patience, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with students, families, and a multidisciplinary team.
    • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to adapt to the needs of diverse learners.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with students with a variety of learning disabilities, including autism, ADHD, and other developmental disorders.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology tools and resources for special education.
  • Ongoing professional development in special education and behavioral techniques.
  • experience with ABA (not required)
