Arts Intern: Curatorial & Education Intern

Background

Founded in 1971 as an artist-driven collective, The Kitchen today reaffirms and expands upon its originating vision as a dynamic cultural institution that centers artists, prioritizes people, and puts process first.

Programming in a kunsthalle model that brings together live performances, exhibition-making, and public programming under one roof, The Kitchen empowers its audiences and communities to think creatively and radically about what it means to shape a multivalent and sustainable future in art. The Kitchen seeks to cultivate and hold space for wild thought, risky play, and innovative and experimental making, encouraging artists and cultural workers alike to defy boundaries and send them into the world to remake art history and catalyze creative change.

Curatorial & Education Intern

This nine-week Curatorial and Education internship provides the opportunity to work closely with the Curatorial and Education team to assist with the development of future programmatic seasons as well as current summer programs. Collaborating between the Education and Curatorial Departments, the Curatorial and Education Intern will seek to grow in perspective about the ways in which curatorial work and educational programming intersect toward creating deeper engagement with avant-garde and experimental art.

Responsibilities

  • The intern will be assigned to support the advancement of several key mid- and long-term curatorial initiatives via their research in collaboration with members of the curatorial team. The intern’s voice and assistance will be key to facilitate The Kitchen’s community engagement initiatives.
  • This internship will include hands-on opportunities to participate in the production of interpretive media via Bloomberg Connects; learn more about projects that engage live performance in addition to object-oriented exhibition-making; and allow for intersections with artists who will be making and learning inside of The Kitchen’s satellite space in the West Village across the summer months in preparation for the spring season.
  • The intern will work side-by-side the Manager of Education and Interpretive Media to ideate, prepare for, and facilitate a series of community engagement events that will touch multiple community organizations and stakeholders over the course of the summer. As The Kitchen continues in a significant renovation of its 19th Street building, its program and offices are temporarily relocated to the West Village, sited for the duration of the renovation at Westbeth Artists Housing, 163B Bank Street, 4th Floor Loft (Between Washington and West Street).

Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications

  • The candidate must be flexible to assist with interdisciplinary projects and intrigued by The Kitchen's history and program in this pivotal moment of growth and change.
  • They will be a highly self-motivated individual with strong writing, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as a keenness toward detail and time management.
  • A familiarity and interest in contemporary artists working in time-based media is a plus.
