The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Rail and Transit, has a full-time vacancy for a Railroad Operations Engineer.
SUMMARY:
To plan, evaluate and perform professional civil engineering and administrative functions for statewide railroad programs and properties for the Department of Transportation.

Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree from an accredited instituted of higher education with a major study in engineering, or possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited instituted of higher education with a major study in engineering and possession of a Master of Business Administration degree from an accredited instituted of higher education.
Experience: One year of experience in civil engineering post Professional Engineer licensure.
OR
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited instituted of higher education with a major study in engineering.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in civil engineering post Professional Engineer licensure.
OR
Education: Associate's degree from an accredited instituted of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.
Experience: Five (5) years of work experience in civil engineering post Professional Engineer licensure.
License/Certification:
- Must be a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Hampshire or a Licensed Professional Engineer in another state and obtain licensure in NH within one year of employment. Licensure designation must be in Civil, Civil Highway, Geo Technical or Structural Engineering.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.
- The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with railroad operations, railroad equipment and general railroad practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs and directs major engineering functions on state-owned railroad properties with responsibility for railroad transportation planning, research, budgeting, design, project management, construction and inspections of railroad modernization, rehabilitation, maintenance and repair projects related to railroad track structure, bridges, signals and drainage structures.
- Performs detailed engineering reviews and evaluations of project designs for proposed Department-owned and privately-owned bridges, drainage systems, grade crossings, track construction, utility facilities and other proposed work on or adjacent to state-owned railroad properties, and dictates modifications in design when necessary.
- Oversees, reviews, approves and inspects all railroad construction, modernization, rehabilitation and maintenance projects performed by the private railroads leasing the state-owned railroad corridors.
- Supervises staff administering railroad programs, including evaluating work performance, and assessing training needs for the purpose of staff development. Recommends hiring, firing, discipline for assigned staff including solving personnel problems and implementing corrective actions.
- Provides project management, coordination with railroad operations and project inspections on all Department, private railroad, and private and public sector projects when the work is located on or adjacent to state-owned railroad property.
- Oversees the operation of private railroads under contract to operate on state-owned railroad lines and their maintenance of these state-owned railroad corridors.
- Formulates and develops state policies regarding state railroad properties and controls use through issuance of licenses, easements, etc.
- Represents Department in negotiations with railroad operators and others related to state-owned railroad properties.
- Responds to public, legislative, and other inquiries on railroad plans, policies and technical specifications..
