Human Resources Intern

About the position

Assist with the city’s day-to-day human resources activities and special projects, focusing on staffing/recruitment, volunteer coordination, worker’s compensation, and record retention. Requires a high degree of confidentiality, ensuring sensitive information is handled with the utmost discretion. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, agile in responding to changing priorities, and capable of managing multiple tasks efficiently. Additional support may be provided in other HR areas. 


Position will work an average of 20 hours per week, up to one year.  Ideal candidate would work a full year to experience the annual cycle of HR work.  Position will work in the office and have flexibility in schedule within regular business hours of 8am - 4:30pm. Ideal start date in March, flexible for the right candidate.

Interviews will take place in February.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with recruitment procedures including posting and marketing positions, interview scheduling and material preparation, communication with applicants, participate as interview panelist and other hiring and onboarding tasks.
  • Provide support for worker’s compensation program, including claim submission, record keeping and filing.
  • Assist with volunteer coordination including connecting volunteers to city departments, communication with all parties, and associated records retention.
  • Provide exceptional customer service via email, phone and in person to staff and the public on human resource related issues, provide outreach and answer questions.
  • Assist in preparation, marketing, setup, and other logistics for training and development or other events and activities.
  • Attend meetings, participate in committees, and represent human resources division.
  • Assist with ID badge creation, HR record retention and filing (electronic and hard copy) and other routine paperwork related items.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary education in human resources management or related field.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer equipment and software including word processing and web-based systems.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated competence and comfort with supporting the city's strategic objectives for racial equity.
  • Previous office experience.
  • Strong organizational, attention to detail and customer service skills.
