Arts Intern: A.I.R. Gallery Intern

Background

A.I.R. is a vibrant, feminist, artist-run nonprofit arts organization and alternative space that champions the voices of women and non-binary artists.

For more than half a century, A.I.R. Gallery has been a shelter in the storm for women artists marginalized by the mainstream contemporary art world and art historical canon. In that time, thousands of women and non-binary artists—at every stage of their careers and from around the globe—have come together at A.I.R. on the premise that feminist art practice is not about the kind of work an artist makes, but about how they work with others.

Through our programming—including 20–25 solo and curated group exhibitions each year, regular free public events, our Fellowship Program for Emerging Artists, and education and outreach initiatives in local schools and domestic violence shelters—A.I.R. centers creative risk-taking and community building in the face of persistent inequities. A self-directed governing body, the organization is an alternative to mainstream institutions and thrives on its network of active participants.

Gallery Intern Overview

The A.I.R. Gallery Intern will work on two projects over the course of their time at the gallery: one focused on helping to produce our Annual Postcard Exhibition, a global open call to artists to show postcard-sized works of art; and one helping to create an internal guide (or finding aid) to our archives. This combination of archival and administrative work provides the opportunity to experience the non-profit and alternative art field from a multiplicity of angles and perspectives.

Typically, we install up to three exhibitions each month, a pace which allows for an immersive experience during a summer internship and creates opportunities to meet and interact with artists and other arts professionals in our community and participate in the behind-the-scenes tasks that make an exhibition possible in a small non-profit space.

In working with scholarly material firsthand, the intern will learn about archives, including how they are processed, stored, and activated, and what this means for telling stories outside of mainstream narratives.

These projects will provide interns with experience to help them determine which aspects of arts administration excite them and what future opportunities they would like to pursue.

We will also take a trip to Fales Library at NYU to visit the archives in person and learn about their importance.
