LHSI Intern: Public Health Practice

Program Summary:  

This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IUI undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 and are paid $13/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Overview of the internship site: Join us in real world public health practice to be a part of the behind-the-scenes action happening to make Indiana a healthier state. The Center for Public Health Practice supports public health organizations in Indiana and beyond by providing public health evaluations, analyses, assessments, and community-centered learning opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Center uses student assistance for a variety of public health initiatives. This internship will primarily focus on a public health and media project led by the Center and the FSPH Department of Marketing, Communication, and recruitment to build an educational/outreach opportunity for media partners interested in learning more about public health issues. This student will attend meetings with staff and leadership in public health agencies, be responsible for some written and verbal communication with partners, will help with the logistics of documentation and scheduling meetings, etc.  

Work Environment and Dress Code:  Some work will be in office settings with our partners and the student should be in business casual. Other times, work may be performed offsite or in the FSPH office and jeans are allowed.

Hours per week: flexible based on student needs (10 maximum), scheduling. Much of the work may be remote. Some hours may be worked outside of normal office hours but much of time meeting with the Center Director will be in regular office hours. There are no minimum hours per shift needed to be productive.

Project-specific qualifications: Candidates should have attention to detail, a desire to help humanity, be comfortable with change, and be able to work independently at times while being confident to ask questions when you need help. Strong writing skills and comfortability in talking with other agencies is a plus. Candidate should have access to their own transportation for meetings off-site the IUI campus. Travel will be limited to within Marion County.

By the end of the LHSI program, you will:

LHSI Qualifications  

·        must be graduating May 2027 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2025) 

·        full-time IUI undergraduate 

·        minimum overall GPA of 2.0 

·        All majors welcome
