Overview of the internship site: I am a scientist and transplant liver doctor dedicated to improving the devastating journey experienced by people with liver disease and the family members who help take care of them. In my research, I study individuals with chronic liver disease which is not curable for most. Chronic liver disease can progress to cirrhosis which is a life-threatening disease often requiring liver transplant. My research is focused on improving health care outcomes for these individuals. One of my goals is to improve patient reported outcomes such as quality of life. I also am exploring the idea that measuring and following quality of life will help us better manage chronic liver disease. My other research in in the post-transplant setting, where I'm interested in looking at psychological issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety after a major life event such as needing a transplant. Finally, I have an ongoing project with other universities to measure the financial and social burdens of needing a transplant.
