Program Summary:    

This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IUI undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 and are paid $13/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Department/Office: Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children; Radiology and Imaging Sciences

Overview of the internship site: My research focuses on understanding and predicting fractures in developing bone with the clinical goal of predicting and understanding fractures in children. To accomplish my research aims, I use both animal models and clinical studies in two different areas. First, I study the types of forces that lead to fractures in children who have suffered child abuse. Second, I study how medical imaging can evaluate the quality of bone and the ability of bones to resist fractures. Specific projects include (1) Animal Models of Child Abuse Fractures, (2) Child Abuse Imaging, (3) Quantitative Bone Ultrasound, and (4) Animals Models of Pediatric Bone Quality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The tasks will vary by project. However, typical tasks would include preparing animal bones for imaging or mechanical testing, imaging animal bones, helping with mechanical testing, assisting with image and data processing after imaging, analyzing patient images, or searching medical records for patient data.

Work Environment and Dress Code: The work is performed primarily in an office setting and a lab setting; with dress code business casual

Project-specific qualifications: There are no specific prerequisites. However, maturity in dealing with sensitive patient data, attention to detail with processing samples and collecting data, and comfort with quantitative techniques and software (programming, coding, etc.) would be beneficial.

Hours per week: 10; flexible within regular work hours

LHSI Qualifications    

  • must be graduating May 2027 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2025)
  • Current full-time IUI undergraduate
  • minimum overall GPA of 2.0
  • All majors welcome
