
LHSI Intern: Research Intern, lymphedema after breast cancer treatment
Program Summary:
This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IUI undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 and are paid $13/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Overview of the internship site: I am a reconstructive plastic surgeon at IU with a laboratory focused on lymphedema (chronic) that occurs after breast cancer treatment. My laboratory is at the Indiana Center for Regenerative Medicine and Engineering (ICRME) on the IUPUI campus. It focuses on a common problem of lymphedema (chronic arm swelling with no cure) that affects 10 million Americans and occurs frequently after breast cancer surgical treatment. I am a plastic surgeon at IU that clinically specializes in breast cancer reconstruction. My laboratory studies novel targeted, focal gene-based therapies to treat and prevent lymphedema. We utilize an animal model of lymphedema.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: PCR, Histology, Cell culture, animal and human tissue processing, data analyses and data entry
Work Environment and Dress Code: The work is performed primarily in a lab setting; with dress code of laboratory dress code as approved by IUSoM environmental health safety (EHS)
Hours per week: 10, scheduling is flexible within regular work hours

LHSI Qualifications
· must be graduating May 2027 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2025)
· Current full-time IUI undergraduate
· minimum overall GPA of 2.0
· All majors welcome
