The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking an entry-level Attorney to perform a wide variety of legal services, with a focus on civil litigation.

 

Job Summary:

Duties include researching and interpreting relevant laws and providing legal advice; representing the department in civil matters in state court and small claims court; representing the Board of Pardons and Parole on administrative appeals; disseminating of information pursuant to subpoenas.

Licenses and Certifications:

The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school; be a member of the South Dakota State Bar or willing and qualified to become a member of the South Dakota State Bar, and qualify for appointment as a Special Assistant Attorney General.

Knowledge of:

  • state and federal laws, rules and regulations relating to corrections including institutional corrections, juvenile aftercare, and adult parole;
  • prison laws and requirements;
  • parole board procedures, due process requirements and case law governing parole practices;
  • juvenile corrections and juvenile justice;
  • SD State government operations; and administrative law.

Ability to:

  • communicate clearly in both oral and written communications;
  • solve problems and articulate issues for a wide variety of audiences;
  • generate required documents independent of a legal secretary or paralegal assistant. 

Working conditions or other Specific requirements. Will be required to enter DOC facilities on occasion.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
