
LHSI Intern: Emergency Medicine Clinical Research Student Assistant
Program Summary:
This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IUI undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 and are paid $13/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Department/Office: Medicine, IU Health Methodist Hospital, and Eskenazi Hospital; Department of Emergency Medicine
Overview of the internship site: As a clinical research intern, you will assist with a variety of tasks related to the study of emergency medicine, a broad field that covers the many ailments arriving at the emergency room, with a deep focus on how to improve particular aspects of urgent care. You will work alongside members of the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine research team, which encompasses all aspects of clinical research – from regulatory and enrollment to follow-up and study completion. This experience would be most beneficial for students interested in a future career in healthcare and/or clinical research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Your duties and responsibilities will vary throughout the year based on which clinical studies are currently active but will likely include assisting research personnel with the following activities:
- Identifying and selecting potential research subjects by reviewing existing protected health information, screening subjects, and conducting interviews
- Performing subject interviews and assessments for data required by protocol(s), as well as chart review and data abstraction
- Following up on study documentation with necessary stakeholders (healthcare providers, study participants, laboratory personnel, etc.)
- Ensuring proper documentation of case report forms, regulatory documents, PI notes, and any other mandatory study related documents and ensuring quality and accuracy
- Communicating and keeping researchers and/or PI up to date on any problems or concerns related to the research study or trial
- May be responsible for collecting clinical samples (such as blood, urine, etc.)
- Providing other various support for clinical research efforts
Work Environment and Dress Code: The work is performed primarily in an office setting; with dress code business casual or ceil blue/ black scrubs
Hours per week: flexible based on student needs (10 maximum); flexible within regular work hours

LHSI Qualifications
- must be graduating May 2027 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2025)
- Current full-time IUI undergraduate
- minimum overall GPA of 2.0
- All majors welcome
