SALARY: $38,516- $67,404

The Challenge​​​​​​​

We are hiring an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Asheville Resident Engineering team.

 

In this role, you will

  • Serve as a Project Inspector on roadway and structure projects.
  • Support senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.
  • Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
  • Observe and document contractor’s operations.
  • Make measurements and calculations of pay quantities.
  • Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
  • Work independently and as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
  • Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
  • Obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.

What You Bring

  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction, contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
  • Sampling and testing materials experience to evaluate acceptance.
  • Skills evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
  • Experience maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public
  • You can apply math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Good eyesight to use testing equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
  • Experience to exercise limited decision making and judgement.
  • Ability to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
  • Ability to work around workplace hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
  • You can work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.
  • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling.
  • Strength to lift 50+ pounds.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for any assigned project in Division 13.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Safety toe shoes.

Education & Experience

  • Associates Degree in Civil Engineering, Survey Technology, or a related discipline, and
  • 2+ years of engineering technician experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
