Community Engagement Associate: Voter Education Service Support

This specific position is part of the Community Engagement Associates program in which students work in a specific department on campus to support campus and community engagement initiatives. Community Engaged Service Support CEA  

The Community Engaged Service Support CEA works directly with a faculty or staff mentor to support the creation, expansion, or deepening of a community engagement/service learning project or program not connected to a specific course. In a community engaged service role, the employee should possess strong leadership and self-autonomy qualities as their responsibilities encompass administrative tasks, meeting coordination and programming obligations, and effective decision-making. Work may include but is not limited to collecting information, maintaining records and schedules, practicing written and oral communication, assisting with logistics, planning with community partners, and implementing program assessment and evaluation.

 

Project Summary and Goals:  

The Civic Engagement CEA will assist in the execution of Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement events, programs and promotions developed out of the campus Political Engagement Group in collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, the Center for Service and Learning, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and more. The CEA will participate in the generation of ideas of ways to engage more students in the civic process including voting, following legislation at the state and federal level, and engaging with elected officials. They will collaborate with other students and student organizations to identify programs that resonate with students and will inspire and engage them. These can be events (in person or virtual), communications and social media campaigns, and more. The CEA will use the CLDE theory of change as a framework for identifying programs and initiatives that will move IU Indianapolis along the civic-minded campus continuum.  

Types of activities the CEA position will support:  

  • Communications around civic engagement 
  • Events and activities that engage students in civic learning, including Canvas modules  
  • Targeting programs at low voting populations (first year students, business/computer science majors)  
  • Deliberative dialogues around public policy issues (see nifi.org)   

Positions, Duties, and Tasks:  

The CEA will:  

  • Work with other students, student groups and organizations to identify and strategize on programs, events and communications that engage more students in voting and the political process. Ideally these students will include representatives from USG, Social Justice Scholars, Civic Engagement Assistants, Bonner Scholars, Honors College and more. (40%)  
  • Leverage community partners who can support and participate in events, programs and activities (15%)  
  • Engage with national networks like Students Learn Students Vote and Ask Every Student to learn about what other campuses are doing and whether we can adapt programs to IU Indianapolis. (15%) 4. Identify resources needed, develop plans and timelines, and execute programs, initiatives and communications strategies. (25%)  
  • Actively participate in the campus Political Engagement Group. (5%)

Availability needed for the CEA(s) schedule:  

Requires weekly availability on campus Mon-Fri between 9 am and 4 pm.
