Technical Theater Internship

 

The  Technical Theater Internship is a partnership between Door Shakespeare, Lawrence University, and the Björklunden Lodge.
 

Door Shakespeare is a non profit, professional theater producing two shows in alternating repertory throughout the summer months on the Björklunden campus. Shows run Monday through Saturday: weekdays at 7:30 and Saturdays at 5:00. Sunday is the company day off.

DATES: Start date is flexible, between June 2 and June 12. The last day of the internship is August 17.

PERFORMANCE VENUE: Björklunden, 7590 Boynton Ln. Baileys Harbor, WI 54202

PAID INTERNSHIP: A stipend of $4,000 will be distributed as follows: half at the end of the first week, and half midway through the internship.
 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Technical Theater Interns facilitate the operations of Door Shakespeare’s production team. They help prepare sets, properties, costumes, and lights for two productions. Upon opening the season, the technical theater intern will help set up and/or take down each show as well as be a part of the running crew.
 

Door Shakespeare believes in providing a well-rounded experience for our interns in their chosen field with additional opportunities to explore all areas of the theater. We are dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment supplemented with high levels of responsibility and flexible learning opportunities guided by individual talents and interests.

 

The technical theater intern’s primary responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following.

  • Prepare the performance space, dressing rooms, and house in preparation for the rehearsal and performance period.
  • Assist Costume, Set, and Lighting Designer(s) with the 2025 build.
  • Be a part of the tech crew for the performance run, which includes, but is not limited to
    • set-up and strike for each performance
    • scenic and properties maintenance
    • Lighting Equipment Maintenance
      • Check and change bulbs
      • Check correct cable connections
      • Check and reset GFI outlets

In addition to Door Shakespeare responsibilities, the internship includes work in the Björklunden Lodge ten hours a week. Responsibilities include the following.

  • Preparing the dining room for Lodge Guests.
  • Preparing lodging rooms for Björklunden Guests.

 

THE WORKPLACE

Door Shakespeare performs outdoors on a wooden stage abutting Lake Michigan in Björklunden, Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin. The company is invested in safety and accessibility for all performers, but work days will involve outdoor rehearsal and performance in fluctuating temperature and weather conditions.

The Björklunden Lodge is located on Lake Michigan and has a great room, three seminar rooms, a dining room, a kitchen, and 22 guest rooms. There are two lakeside decks, a second-story observation deck, an elevator, and a computer lab.

Door Shakespeare is a COVID-19 vaccinated workplace.

 

GUIDANCE

The technical theater intern reports to Door Shakespeare’s producing artistic director and the Björklunden operations manager with additional guidance from Door Shakespeare’s designers and stage managers.

 

HOUSING

Dormitory-style housing is provided in the Björklunden Lodge. Each dorm room has up to 5 students with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and common area. The Björklunden Lodge is a magnificent two-story, 37,000-square-foot lodge containing a great room, three seminar rooms, a dining room, and a kitchen. Wireless Internet is throughout.

 

TRANSPORTATION

While Door County is a tourist destination known for its natural beauty, it does not have public transportation. During the 2025 season, interns need to arrange their own transportation to, and within, Door County.
