Costume and Wardrobe Internship

 

The Costume and Wardrobe Internship is a partnership between Door Shakespeare, Lawrence University, and the Björklunden Lodge.

 

Door Shakespeare is a non profit, professional theater producing two shows in alternating repertory throughout the summer months on the Björklunden campus. Shows run Monday through Saturday: weekdays at 7:30 and Saturdays at 5:00. Sunday is the company day off.

 

TITLE: Theater Intern: Costume and Wardrobe

RELATED AREAS OF STUDY: Theater, Production, and  Costumes

DATES: Start date is flexible, between June 2 and June 12. The last day of the internship is August 17.

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE LOCATION: 10038 Highway 57, Door County, Wisconsin, 54234

PERFORMANCE VENUE: Björklunden, 7590 Boynton Ln. Baileys Harbor, WI 54202

PAID INTERNSHIP: A stipend of $4,000 will be distributed as follows: half at the end of the first week, and half midway through the internship.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Costume and Wardrobe Interns facilitate the costume build and are part of the wardrobe crew.

Door Shakespeare believes in providing a well-rounded experience for our interns in their chosen field with additional opportunities to explore all areas of the theater. We are dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment supplemented with high levels of responsibility and flexible learning opportunities guided by individual talents and interests.

The costume and wardrobe Intern’s primary responsibilities include the following.

  • Prepare the performance space, dressing rooms, and costume shop in preparation for the rehearsal and performance period.
  • Assist Costume Designer(s) with the 2025 costume build, which includes, but is not limited to
    • Taking and noting measurements during fitting appointments.
    • Procuring materials and costume pieces.
    • Washing, Ironing, and pinning costume piece elements.
    • Machine and hand sewing.
    • Preparing costume racks for individual actor tracks.
  • Wardrobe crew for the performance run, which includes, but is not limited to
    • Placing pre-sets and striking costumes for each performance.
    • Laundering, dry-cleaning, and maintenance of costumes for the performance period.

In addition to Door Shakespeare costume responsibilities, the internship includes work in the Björklunden Lodge. Responsibilities include the following.

  • Preparing the dining room for Lodge Guests.
  • Preparing lodging rooms for Björklunden Guests.

 

GUIDANCE

The costume production intern reports to Door Shakespeare’s producing artistic director and the Björklunden operations manager with additional guidance from Door Shakespeare’s costume designer and stage management team. 

 

THE WORKPLACE

Door Shakespeare performs outdoors on a wooden stage abutting Lake Michigan in Björklunden, Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin. The company is invested in safety and accessibility for all performers, but work days will involve outdoor rehearsal and performance in fluctuating temperature and weather conditions.

The Björklunden Lodge is located on Lake Michigan and has a great room, three seminar rooms, a dining room, a kitchen, and 22 guest rooms. There are two lakeside decks, a second-story observation deck, an elevator, and a computer lab.

Door Shakespeare is a COVID-19 vaccinated workplace.

 

GUIDANCE

The costume theater intern reports to Door Shakespeare’s producing artistic director and the Björklunden operations manager with additional guidance from Door Shakespeare’s costume designer and stage managers.

 

HOUSING

Dormitory-style housing is provided in the Björklunden Lodge. Each dorm room has up to 5 students with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and common area. The Björklunden Lodge is a magnificent two-story, 37,000-square-foot lodge containing a great room, three seminar rooms, a dining room, and a kitchen. Wireless Internet is throughout.
 

TRANSPORTATION

While Door County is a tourist destination known for its natural beauty, it does not have public transportation. During the 2025 season, interns need to arrange their own transportation to, and within, Door County.
