Student worker position in Biological and Environmental Sciences
The biological and environmental sciences department is seeking a student worker. The department administers over twenty student learning labs, and wants an organized, self-motivated individual to assist with the implementation. We also have over nine biologist conducting active research. Our student worker will have the opportunity to gain insights into the operation of active research labs. You will learn about the logistics of lab organization and enactment along with lab safety, chemical storage, and biological hazards. These skills are sought after by employers in biology and industries with labs or large companies with worker safety programs. We prefer a science major so these skills can directly benefit your career goals, but any student that believes this job can grow their career options is encouraged to apply.
The department is seeking a friendly individual that can also assist with office operations. You can expect to assist with current and future student inquiries about our programs or simple directions, or distribution of mail and packages. You must be available 10 to 19 hours each week during normal office hours: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The position will be flexible around your student schedule, but will rarely have any hours after 5:00 pm or on weekends.
Job Duties:
- Welcome students and visitors to the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and help with inquiries or directions.
- Help organize and maintain office and reception area.
- Distribute incoming mail and packages and shred any waste paper.
- Assist faculty/staff with the set-up and breakdown of laboratories: wash, organize, and shelve glassware, fold and shelve lab coats.
- Organize and Inventory lab supplies in storage areas. Data entry into Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and online inventory systems.
- Clean lab benchtops and reorganize supplies between lab sessions.
- Assist with answering telephones, filing correspondence, running errands on campus, stuffing envelopes and making copies.
- Increase laboratory skill set by participating in various projects with faculty and staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must be currently enrolled at East Texas A&M University.
