About the Opportunity
Viocare, Inc., a leader in dietary assessment and nutrition technology, is seeking a highly motivated PhD graduate or PhD candidate (graduating within the next year) for a two-year Research Fellowship. This is a unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking projects that apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance personalized nutrition tools and address critical public health challenges.
Note: This position will be funded by a State of New Jersey grant and requires that the candidate must have prepared a dissertation to receive a Ph.D. degree and be ready to present and defend the dissertation within 12 months or has just received a Ph.D. degree within the past 12 months. This job is contingent on Viocare's receiving the New Jersey PhD grant funding. Although the position is remote, Viocare requires that the individual have a New Jersey residence. Preference will be given to graduates of New Jersey universities.
Position Overview
The selected Research Fellow will play a key role in advancing innovative technologies and contributing to applied research, including:
- Enhancing Viocare’s VioScreen dietary assessment tool through AI-driven personalized feedback solutions.
- Supporting the development of AI/ML-integrated mobile applications to enable real-time dietary tracking and nutritional recommendations.
- Expanding AI capabilities within the Living Well Navigator (LWN) tool to curate resources addressing food insecurity, including WIC, SNAP, and community support programs.
- Conducting applied AI/ML research in healthcare, with opportunities to publish findings and present at national and international conferences.
- Participating in NIH-funded projects to advance personalized nutrition technologies and tackle public health concerns.
- Optimizing VioScreen’s 100,000+ assessment dataset by streamlining the user questionnaire while maintaining analysis quality and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement AI/ML algorithms to enhance dietary assessment tools and personalized nutrition feedback mechanisms.
- Advance the Living Well Navigator’s AI capabilities to improve resource identification and scalability across diverse geographic regions.
- Analyze dietary intake data and social determinants of health (SDoH) to uncover patterns and deliver actionable insights.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of dietitians, software developers, and researchers to ensure technology aligns with end-user needs.
- Contribute to the integration of AI/ML functionalities into mobile applications, enhancing user engagement and data accuracy.
Qualifications
- PhD (recently completed or expected within the next year) in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, Biomedical Informatics, or a related discipline.
- Strong expertise in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and advanced data analytics, with a proven track record of AI/ML project implementation.
- Proficiency in programming languages and frameworks such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or equivalent tools.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in public health, food insecurity, or healthcare-focused applications is preferred.
- Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a remote environment.

To be eligible for a grant under the IRFP, the applicant fellow must satisfy the following criteria as February 7, 2025.
- He or she must have prepared a dissertation to receive a Ph.D. degree and be ready to present and defend the dissertation within 12 months or has just received a Ph.D. degree within the past 12 months.
- He or she must be in good standing with the conferring university.
- He or she must be a United States citizen, be a legal permanent resident, or possess all of the following: a valid immigrant visa, a valid employment authorization document, and an I-485 application pending with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. (Fellow candidates seeking Optional Practical Training (OPT) are not eligible to apply for this position/ IRFP grant).
