Stormwater & Environmental Internship - 2025

The City of Ankeny is seeking a highly motivated student to complete a summer internship with the City's Public Works –Stormwater & Environmental Department.

The compensation rate is set at $19.00 per hour, 40 hours per week for 13 weeks, mid-May to mid-August. Pre-employment drug screen and background check is required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct field inspections for erosion control practices and document field observations.
Investigate suspected illicit discharges to the storm sewer system.
Complete field observations and record attributes of stormwater infrastructure.
Assist with surface water quality sampling.
Perform a variety of environmental and/or engineering duties on routine or minor projects.
Inspect projects for maintenance work required and assist staff with minor maintenance.
Entry Requirements and Skills:

All applicants who are pursuing an associate or bachelor degree and recent graduates will be considered; however, preference will be given to students majoring in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field who have completed their freshman year or higher.
Knowledge of office software (Word, Excel, etc.) and be capable of working with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other engineering automation tools is a plus.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years old.
Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in office environment.
Works in field environment.
Climbs and walks over uneven terrain.
Performs outside work in all kinds of weather conditions
