Job Description and Duties

Under supervision of the WHL Sr. Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the position provides core dedicated support to the statewide nongame health program and Sr. Wildlife Veterinarian (Nongame). Core duties include assisting with wildlife health investigations for mountain lions and wild lagomorphs (e.g., federally listed Riparian brush rabbit); technical support for Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) surveillance in wild lagomorphs; field capture, handling, physically examination, sampling, and vaccination of wild lagomorphs against RHD. Maintain the mountain lion health database; assist with preparation of legislatively mandated annual report of necropsies for depredation-take mountain lions to the Fish and Game Commission. This position will also provide core laboratory support, such as transporting live animals, carcasses, samples, or equipment; routine maintenance, inventory, and cleaning of lab facilities/vehicles; and assist with the care and maintenance of live animals temporarily held at the WHL facility.

 

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.
 

• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.
 

• Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.
 

• Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.
 

• Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.
 

• Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.

Working Conditions

Office setting requires using computer keyboard at least several hours a day. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items up to 40 lbs. Ability to drive for long-distances and/or for several hours at a time, as needed. Must attend occasional meetings. In addition to working with Sacramento-based staff, may interact with Regional staff and members of the public, in the field, via e-mail, and telephone. Ability to travel and perform field work throughout the State, as needed. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions.

NOTE: Willingness to work long irregular hours. Weekend and holiday work frequently required.
