Job description

EICS is a full-time summer program sponsored by Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). All summer program activities will take place in Winston-Salem, NC, hosted on the campuses of WFUSM.

EICS aims to increase diversity in health-related research and provides research training in the cardiovascular sciences under the guidance of faculty research mentors. EICS participants have the opportunity to partner with WFUSM faculty from more than 15 different departments, sections, and centers. The curriculum includes biomedical laboratory research, a lecture series led by faculty and guest speakers, career-enhancing activities, a journal club, and a research symposium during which students present their research findings.  

EICS is one of multiple summer programs offered at WFUSM, and students accepted into the program will be able to actively network with participants of several other summer programs.

Undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds with an interest in a biomedical research career, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, are encouraged to apply.


The EICS summer program offers the following:
• Two months in-person paid internship 
• Free housing and round-trip transportation to Winston-Salem  

As a program participant, you will:
• Conduct biomedical research with an experienced faculty mentor 
• Participate in a lecture series with featured presentations by faculty and guest speakers 
• Develop research- and critical thinking skills
• Participate in career-enhancing activities 
• Present your work with a poster at the Summer Research Symposium
• Be part of a diverse group of undergraduate students with an interest in a career in biomedical research 
 

Eligibility Requirements:
**Applicants MUST apply must through the online application at Wake Forest University School of Medicine - Handshake applications are NOT accepted**

• Undergraduate students in good academic standing
    o A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (on the 4.0 scale) is desired
• Must have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate education
• Must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents
• Undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, are encouraged to apply

In addition to the completed online application, applicants must submit:
• Academic transcript(s) – unofficial or official accepted upon application
   o Official Transcript will be requested if you are accepted to the program
• Two professional references 
   o Personal references (including family members) are not accepted.
