Web Content Editor Internship

The Web Content Editor Internship is located within the Office of Public Affairs (OPA) at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). OPA oversees all media, marketing, communications, social media and web content for the Museum. The primary role of the department is to promote the Museum’s exhibitions, public programs and educational initiatives. This department is also responsible for enhancing the Museum's brand and reputation. Staff members develop communications plans and publicity campaigns for events, exhibition openings, fundraising, special events and membership activities.
The Web Content Intern will assist with curating and creating content that aligns with OPA's editorial calendar, which is designed to promote the museum's mission and priorities. The intern will gather credits for collection objects posted on the NMAAHC website, assist with migrating blog posts from Tumblr to nmaahc.si.edu, and search Getty Images for feature images and videos for blog posts. The Web Content Intern will also assist in ideating storytelling techniques for the online experience for upcoming exhibitions including "At the Vanguard," which opens in the fall 2025, and in research and promotion of August and September campaigns focused on Black women entrepreneurs and educators, respectively.
The intern can anticipate learning:
- Develop proficiency in content editing, proofreading, and writing styles.
- Enhance research skills for content development
- Understand the basic principles of page design and magazine/journal layout
- Collaborate with the editorial and design teams to integrate content and visuals
- Learn the basics of magazine and journal creation.
- Understand the collaborative nature of publishing, including working with editors, writers, and designers
Duties Include (but are not limited to):
- Working with NMAAHC staff, fellow interns and others to edit, design and evaluate content on the museum's Drupal website
- Performing basic web research and curating images to complement online content
- Becoming familiar with galleries, collections by viewing museum and attending open meetings and programs
- Assisting with the implementation of a lively editorial calendar of future web content
