Why does the job exist?
The role of the State Epidemiologist is pivotal in safeguarding public health and enhancing community well-being within the state by guiding data-driven public health decisions, directing disease surveillance systems, and providing expert consultation
on epidemiological matters. As a key figure reporting directly to the Director of the Center for Health Protection and providing direct support to the Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Health, this position has an extremely high level of impact on the
mission of NMDOH.
How does it get done?
- Epidemiology and Data Collection.
- Provide epidemiological assistance to the state public health agency, local public health agencies, and partners.
- Provide expert guidance for epidemiological methods, public health interventions, and notifiable conditions and represent New Mexico in national and regional epidemiology and public health forums.
- Enhance data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination.
- Develop and implement surveillance and evaluation plans.
- Contribute to the development of reports and related state plans.
- Provide technical assistance in writing grant applications, cooperative agreements, and requests for proposals.
- Make presentations at national and local conferences
Who are the customers?
The customers are initially the staff and programs who implement and use public health epidemiological data to improve public health. The ultimate customers, however, are the residents of New Mexico who seek better health and quality of life.
Ideal Candidate
Data analysis
- The ability to use statistical techniques and software to organize, interpret, and transform data. This includes identifying patterns and trends and drawing conclusions.
Communication
- The ability to use speaking and writing skills to inform the public and officials. This includes communicating with policy makers on public health and giving presentations to them.
Organization
- The ability to track down and organize patient information.
Minimum Qualification
Requires an MD, licensure and certification to practice in New Mexico and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel is required.
