Peer Advisor
Description:
The Peer Advisor is a student-held paraprofessional hourly position. The Peer Advisor performs duties in the School of Science Peer Advising office during the fall and spring semester, with the option of summer employment.
Peer Advisors will advise a diverse body of science majors educating them about academic and course advising resources and tools, in order to help build students’ academic planning confidence, knowledge about their degree program and action plan to carry out their academic and career goals.
The Peer Advisor role is an in-person position in Innovation Hall. It is housed in the School of Science Dean’s Office along with professional academic advisors. On a daily basis, Peer Advisors will mainly work with students and their supervisor but work with all School of Science academic advisors to help other science students navigate their time at IU Indianapolis. Peer Advisors offer a student perspective when helping students.
Peer Advisor Duties

60%: Advise and teach students one-on-one.
- Teach students to use academic advising tools and resources.
- Advise students on course planning and balancing loads.
- Be a resource for referrals to a variety of campus services.

30-40%: Administrative
- Receive and respond to e-mail messages and telephone calls in the Peer Advising Office.
- Track and document contact with students.
- Refer to and schedule appointments with staff advisors when appropriate.
- Student outreach to promote campus resources & success in classes.

0-10%: Depending on your personal skills and goals, you will work with your supervisor to think of additional assignments. These can include:
- Teaching groups:
- Prepare and conduct educational informational sessions or workshops for peers as assigned
- Marketing Services
- Maintain social media content Canvas, Instagram, etc.
- Create printed educational material/resources, flyers, and other signage to promote services.
- Make in-classmarketing/informational presentations.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Undergraduate student in the School of Science
- Junior or senior class status
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Good interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of IU Indianapolis, the School of Science, and/or campus resources
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of AdRx, Academic Advisement Report, and/or Student Appointment Scheduler
- Knowledge of IU Indianapolis and/or School of Science academic policies and procedures
- Previous student leadership positions on campus (e.g., O-Team, first year seminar mentor, teaching assistant, etc.)
