This position will be in support of the Department of Pharmacology at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI). The particular research program includes analysis of the role of nucleic acid sensing pathways in the immune response to ionizing radiation and radioimmunopathogenesis at the cellular and organismal level. The incumbent will study the activity of pattern-recognition receptor-associated signaling, specifically the cGAS-STING and RIG-I/MDA5-MAVS axes, in response to ionizing radiation and radiation-related gene expression. The scope of work includes gene expression analysis with a particular interest in retroelement expression, analysis of cytokine profiles, intercellular communication, inflammatory and fibrosis markers. Laboratory experiments will be performed with human and murine macrophages, irradiated wild-type and transgenic mice. The effects of pharmacological modulators of specific pathways in response to pro- and anti-inflammatory signals and stress factors, including ionizing radiation will be analyzed.
