This specific position is part of the Community Engagement Associates program in which students work in a specific department on campus to support campus and community engagement initiatives. Overview of department:
The Polis Center–a unit of the IU Luddy School of Informatics and Computing at IUI—works with community partners in Indiana and beyond to develop innovative place-based policies and practices for healthier and more resilient communities. It supports community development and quality-of-life efforts, natural disaster resiliency, and population health management using geospatial technologies to integrate, manage, and visualize the rapidly growing information on the places where we live and work. We do this through place-based research, analysis, collaborations, and advanced information technologies. We help communities and organizations build capacity, provide actionable information, and develop knowledge platforms.
Research Support CEA
The Community Engaged Research Support CEA works directly with a faculty or staff mentor to support the creation, expansion, or deepening of a community engagement project or program not connected to a specific course. In a research support role, employees are expected to operate with a high level of autonomy and self-direction to exercise judgement and decision making during their research responsibilities. Work may include but is not limited to: communicating research findings both written and orally, assisting with data collection and data analysis, assessing community needs or social issues, and applying developed research instrument and protocols based on project parameters.

Project summary and goals:
In this role, you will be supporting the SAVI Community Information System and associated projects. SAVI provides neighborhood-level data to citizens and nonprofits in the Indianapolis Metro Area. We do this through a reliable data warehouse, interactive web applications, research, and training. We are working on a number of projects that present information and data about communities through simple, engaging interfaces.
Positions, duties, and tasks:
You will be responsible for:
- Responding to SAVI user requests that go beyond what can be done in SAVI’s online interface.
- Quality control on SAVI data content
- Using programming packages such as SAS, Python, and/or R to automate data workflows
- Collecting, organizing, visualizing, and disseminating tabular and spatial data.
- Generating static and possibly web-based maps
Qualifications:
- Ability to be organized in a complex process with many overlapping tasks
- Experience in Excel, Access, R, SAS, Python, SQL or other data software
- Experience with data visualizations tools such as Tableau and/or Power BI
- Experience with GIS (geographic information systems) a plus, esri products in particular.
- Familiarity with Census data a plus
The ideal candidate:
- Has coursework in statistics, data analysis, or GIS
- Has experience with static and online data visualization.

Availability needed for the CEA(s) schedule:
Some in-office work is required, but remote work will also be available. Additional hours beyond 10 CEA hours is possible up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.
