Duties
- Responsible for feeding proper types and amounts of rations in both front country and back country situations - insuring stock receive proper nutrition during times of heavy work and off times and they are fed properly on lieu days.
- Responsible for basic veterinary care of animals including but not limited to: worming, vaccinating, administering medication and dressing wounds.
- Responsible for recognition of more serious injuries/illness and coordination of required medical care.
- Responsible for performing farrier duties at regular intervals without causing injury to stock or people and ensuring stock is properly shod before heading into back country..
- Responsible for safely leading strings of up to 8-head over rough mountain trails, requiring long days on the trail and spending up to seven consecutive nights camped in remote back country settings.
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments but don't work on a year-round basis. Pay status will be for approximately 20 pay periods from early March through mid-November and will be in a non-pay status for one pay period from mid-November to the end of February. The position will be in non-pay status for one pay period the first service year. This may change for future service years depending on workload and budget; however, you will be notified by the supervisor in advance of any upcoming change to the non-pay period for the following year.
