Hiring Unit: IU Office of Sustainability 

Job Title: Sustainable Transportation Intern 

Hourly Rate: $13 for undergraduate students; $15 for graduate students 

Hours: 10-20 hours/week

Purpose  

The Sustainable Transportation Intern will be responsible for enhancing and communicating alternative transportation options at their respective Indiana University campus. This individual will assist with ongoing projects, including data collection and interpretation, research on best alternative transportation practices, engagement and awareness campaigns, and the like.  

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities include:   

Bike Program Support (35%) 

Monitor demand of bike racks for reassessment of locations 

Tag bikes that appear to be abandoned  

Recommend improvements to campus bike program 

Quantify Commuting Emissions (25%) 

Assess our currently available commuting data  

Determine greenhouse gas emissions produced by those commuting to/from campus 

Research how other campuses collect commuter data 

Recommend improvements to our data collection process   

Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Program Support (30%) 

Explore other university/carpool programs and provide assessment of differing programs  

Drafting additions to campus Interactive Map’s sustainability tabs and transportation-related maps 

Research and provide assessment of other university public transit access programs 

Other Duties as Assigned (10%) 

Advertise campus sustainability projects that enhance and highlight sustainable transit practices and events 

Assist with other sustainability programs and initiatives across the university system or at your home campus 

Collaborate with sustainability and transportation focused student organizations 

Seek additional funding or grant sources in support of campus / university-wide sustainability & position related initiatives 

Higher ed / sustainability focused professional development and training opportunities  

 

Necessary Tools and Equipment30+ 

Laptop computer and cellphone are required. Occasional printer use; printer will be provided by the university.

Work Environment 

The work performed will be both in person and remote, depending on the assignment.  The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate. 

 

Eligibility and Requirements  

Required Qualifications  

IU undergraduate and graduate students; must maintain student status for the duration of the internship 

Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater  

Must be reliable and possess strong organizational skills 

Strong desire and ability to learn 

Preferred Qualifications 

Familiarity in principles of sustainability and sustainable transportation  

Experience with MS Office applications, specifically Excel, Access, and Word  

Strong writing and communication skills
