Project ACORN Urban Forestry Intern

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Urban Forestry Intern to join our team. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both arboriculture and horticulture. You will work closely with our expert team to assist in the care, maintenance, and management of trees, plants, and landscapes. The internship offers weekly classroom time, practical exposure to tree care, conservation practices, and landscape design, ideal for anyone pursuing a career in these fields.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in tree care tasks, including pruning, planting, and removal, while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Support in the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of tree diseases, pests, and other health issues.
  • Help with landscape maintenance, including planting, watering, mulching, weeding, and fertilizing plant beds.
  • Learn plant identification techniques and assist in plant inventory and data management.
  • Aid in the planning and installation of new landscape designs, including tree and plant selection.
  • Participate in seasonal garden care, including trimming, deadheading, and transplanting.
  • Assist with monitoring and reporting on the health of trees and plants, as well as overall landscape conditions.
  • Maintain and clean equipment and tools used in tree and plant care operations.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure the best horticultural practices are applied.

Requirements

 

  • High School Diploma/GED or willing to obtain
  • A strong interest in trees, plants, and sustainable landscape management.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Physical capability to lift, carry, climb, and perform manual labor tasks.
  • Willingness to learn and follow safety guidelines, especially when operating machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of tree biology, plant care, and horticulture principles.
  • Prior experience in gardening, landscaping, or tree care is a plus.
  • Familiarity with common tools and equipment used in arboriculture and horticulture.
