24-07657 Geologist I

The Office of Property Valuation has an opening for a Geologist I in the Division of Minerals Taxation. We are seeking a highly motivated individual who has the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to elected officials, staff, and other managers.

As a Geologist I for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, you will provide direct technical assistance to PVAs and local officials to resolve tax matters.

1.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in entering tax return data of owners, leases, and new property into UMAST system.
  • Assist coal property tax branch with tax returns, assessments, and mapping issues.
  • Assist with the geological information, manage the core log database, learn MINEX software.
  • Prepare seam section diagrams and other reports as needed.
  • Handle protest as needed.

The successful candidate will possess clear communication skills to work with taxpayers in person or over the telephone and in writing, sometimes in confrontational situations.

2.  Additional / Supplemental information:

  • Required to successfully complete a background investigation including an FBI criminal history record check (fingerprint check).
  • Required to comply with all tax laws.
  • Mostly at a desk using a computer and telephone.
  • Some travel for training and education.

3.  Minimum Requirements

  • EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in geology, earth system science, earth and environmental sciences, or related field.
     
  • EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
     
  • Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
     
  • Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Registration by the Board of Registration for Professional Geologists (KRS Chapter 322A) will substitute for the required education.
     
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

4.  Working Conditions

Work is typically performed both in an office and in a fieldwork setting.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
