Volunteer Engagement Intern

An internship with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. 

The Volunteer Engagement Intern will assist with all functions of volunteer engagement, including outreach, recruitment, communications, cultivation, recognition, and day-of-event coordination/management for Walk MS and Bike MS events. This position will also involve administrative, database management, marketing, social media, and event production activities. This is a hybrid/remote paid internship available for Spring 2025. This Intern will need to be based in Boston/Waltham, MA, New Jersey, Connecticut, or surrounding areas.

Depending on location there will be opportunities to work events on some weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer Recruitment & Cultivation (70%)
    • Develop outreach lists and make calls/emails to prior and potential volunteers (groups and individuals).
    • Research new volunteer groups and volunteer opportunity platforms.
    • Maintain sign-up pages and manage volunteer recruitment and coordination for specific event roles.
    • Utilize social media platforms to market volunteer opportunities.
    • Assist with in-kind sponsorships related to volunteer engagement.
  • Volunteer Engagement Strategy (30%)
    • Brainstorm and implement ways to enhance volunteer experience and recognition pre-event, day-of, and post-event.
    • Support volunteer engagement through various communication channels.
    • Assist with the development and execution of volunteer engagement strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain hands-on experience in volunteer management and engagement.
  • Develop skills in event planning and coordination.
  • Enhance communication, marketing, and organizational skills.
  • Understand the operations of a non-profit organization and the role of volunteers in fundraising events.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree as a Junior or Senior in college or any year in graduate school.
  • Open to all majors, with a preference for Communication, Marketing, Non-Profit Management, Public Relations, or related fields.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work 10-12 weeks, 15-20 hours per week.
  • Access to reliable internet (required for remote or hybrid positions).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for e-mail, document, and spreadsheet creation/management.
  • Comfortable with community outreach through phone calls, emails, and in-person visits.
  • Social media savvy and a team player.

The hourly rate for internships is $15, except when noted differently above OR where local minimum wage exceeds that figure, in which case the hourly rate will be the higher of the two. If you are unable to be paid for this internship due to outside funding or other directives from your educational institution – please let your hiring manager know AFTER you have been identified as the final candidate.
