Friends of Manatee Lagoon is a dedicated nonprofit organization supporting Manatee Lagoon, an FPL Eco-Discovery Center. Our mission is to promote conservation and education about Florida's unique ecosystems, focusing on protecting manatees and their habitats.

Position Overview

Friends of Manatee Lagoon is seeking an enthusiastic and environmentally conscious intern to assist with seagrass restoration, maintenance, and educational programming. This paid internship is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates passionate about marine conservation and public education.

** Please note: This is not an on-campus job opportunity. This internship opportunity is located in West Palm Beach, FL with the Manatee Lagoon. Funding for this program is provided through FAU's School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with seagrass restoration activities, including planting, and monitoring efforts.
  • Conduct seagrass maintenance tasks such as cleaning tanks, monitoring water quality, and ensuring optimal growth conditions.
  • Educate the public about the importance of seagrass ecosystems and their connection to manatee conservation.
  • Develop and deliver interactive presentations and hands-on learning activities for visitors of all ages.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and local partners to advance seagrass restoration initiatives.
  • Document and report progress of the seagrass restoration project.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing or holding a degree in biology, environmental science, marine science, or a related field.
  • Passion for conservation and environmental education.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Previous experience in restoration, research, or education is a plus but not required.
