Blackfriars Theatre Summer Intern (various)
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:
- As an intern with Blackfriars, you will be held to the same code of conduct to which we expect our employees, production staff, and performers to adhere.
- No bullying, harassment, aggression or threats of any kind will be tolerated.
- Interns are expected to dress appropriately and safely for the job at hand.
- Interns work at their own risk—injuries incurred or medical expenses that result from work at Blackfriars Theatre are not the responsibility of the organization, its staff, or its board members.
- Certain internship positions at Blackfriars Theatre are paid on an hourly basis or through a one-time stipend; certain internship positions at Blackfriars Theatre are unpaid. Pay will be agreed upon at time of hiring, and payment offered will be commensurate with experience.
INTERNSHIP POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
OFFICE INTERN (paid position):
- Assist Blackfriars leadership with in-office tasks, including cleaning, organizing, digital filing, and other tasks as necessary; responsibilities will vary with training and experience.
- Assist Blackfriars leadership with outdoor tasks, including gardening, trash removal, and general maintenance.
- Assist Blackfriars leadership with house management on the summer production (Thurs, Fri, Sat evenings; Sat & Sun matinees).
REQUIRED: proficiency with Microsoft Office programs; proficiency with Google Drive; ability to remain calm under pressure; a positive attitude; 2+ years experience in the theatre arts; excellent communication skills
DESIRED: experience answering phones; experience with customer interactions/customer service; experience using AudienceView ticketing system
BTSI STAGE MANAGER (production TBA, stipend offered):
- Attend production meetings (3 total); take and send out meeting minutes
- Help creative team stay organized throughout the entire production process; assist with time management
- Help run auditions and serve as a monitor
- Help create and maintain organizational documents in the show’s Drive folder
- Serve as the main communicator between all production staff, BT leadership, and the cast
- Send daily call sheets to cast and creative team
- Open the theatre at the top of each rehearsal and performance; lock up at the end of each rehearsal and performance
- Help to foster a professional and respectful working environment for all artists involved in production
- Keep a show “bible” with all entrances, exits, and blocking including transitions and set piece movement
- Work with the lighting designer, sound designer, and director to set cues for the show
- Work with house management and ASMs to keep performances on schedule and communicate time calls with cast and crew
- Call the show cues for each performance
- Work with ASM to assign transitions and movement of set pieces where necessary
- Send daily rehearsal and performance reports to production staff
REQUIRED: 2+ years experience stage managing musical theatre productions; working toward a degree in the theatre arts; a positive attitude and professional demeanor; leadership skills; ability to keep calm under pressure; excellent communication skills
DESIRED: experience with ETC light board systems; general knowledge of sound equipment
BTSI ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER (production TBA, stipend offered):
- Assist SM with all responsibility above
- Involvement not required until the week before production, but your presence is welcome throughout the entire process if required for internship hours
REQUIRED: 2+ years experience in the theatre arts; working toward a degree in theatre arts; ability to keep calm under pressure; a positive and professional demeanor; excellent leadership skills; excellent communication skills
DESIRED: knowledge of tech equipment, including ETC light board systems and general sound equipment
BTSI PROPS MASTER (production TBA, stipend offered):
- Attend production meetings (3 total)
- Work with director to create a properties list and determine due date of final props
- Work with director to create a do-fer list and determine due date of do-fers
- Read script and analyze to determine correct look, feel, style, time period, and usability of props
- Work with BT leadership to source borrowed props and purchase props that cannot be borrowed
- Attend designer run the week before tech (date TBD based on tech staff conflicts)
- Attend at least one in-costume dress rehearsal
- Read rehearsal and performance reports DAILY and respond to all show communications within 24 hours
- Rework/repair props as necessary throughout the performance process
- Keep all receipts and a detailed receipt log to hand in no later than one week after the closing performance
REQUIRED: 2+ years experience in the theatre arts; previous experience in props mastery; working toward a degree in theatre arts; ability to keep calm under pressure; a positive and professional demeanor; excellent communication skills; ability to problem solve
DESIRED: artistic skills, including drawing and painting; ability to create specialty props from scratch using skills such as woodworking and 3D printing
BTSI SET BUILD/SET PAINTING (production TBA, stipend offered)
- Work with set designer to to outline a plan for your involvement that will provide growth opportunities for you in the field of set painting/building
- Attend scene shop hours (weekdays 11am-3pm) as needed
- Assist set designer with set build/set painting as needed
REQUIRED: 2+ years experience in the theatre arts; previous experience in set painting or artistic painting; working toward a degree in theatre arts; ability to keep calm under pressure; a positive and professional demeanor; excellent communication skills; ability to problem solve
DESIRED: experience with general build equipment (nail guns, drills, table saw, etc); ability to read design plans and set elevations
BTSI ASSISTANT DIRECTOR or ASSISTANT CHOREOGRAPHER (production TBA, these positions are unpaid):
- Work with director or choreographer to outline a plan for your involvement that will provide growth opportunities for you in the field of directing
- Assist director or choreographer and other creative staff as needed
REQUIRED: 2+ years experience in the theatre arts; working toward a degree in theatre arts; ability to keep calm under pressure; a positive and professional demeanor; excellent leadership skills; excellent communication skills; asst. choreo must formal dance training
DESIRED: experience with directing or choreography and/or leading a team; experience with dramaturgy and/or script analysis
