Programs Assistant - Invent@NMU
Job Duties:
This position supports Invent@NMU and Innovate Marquette staff with internal and external (clients and partners) event preparation and planning, day-of event support, promotion and marketing, and programming tasks, including;
- Event planning and execution
- Create Event Programs
- Create Event Staffing and Schedule Documents
- Obtain all supplies for events
- Create and Review item checklists
- Prepare event displays
- Provide additional support to the Programs Coordinator and Outreach & Engagement Department
- Attending community events across the Upper Peninsula to represent Invent@NMU as a brand ambassador (may require weekend hours)
- Network and engage with community members to promote Invent@NMU's entrepreneurship services
- Explain Invent@NMU's programs and offerings to event attendees
- Document the van outreach journey and post to Invent@NMU’s social platforms
- Conduct demonstrations and share success stories to showcase the impact of the Invent@NMU program
- As a part of Invent@NMU’s Engagement Department, Programs Assistant may also provide support with marketing tasks including;
- Writing blogs, newsletters and/or press releases
- Creating and editing content for social media
- Managing social media platforms and websites
About Invent@NMU:
In October 2014, Invent@NMU opened its doors as a student program of Northern Michigan University. Our goal is to provide an experiential learning opportunity for students as well as to help regional inventors and entrepreneurs take their product or business ideas to market or assist existing business owners looking to innovate from within. Here, students get to use their education at NMU in parallel with mentorship from the professional management staff of the economic development organization Innovate Marquette SmartZone to contribute to the entrepreneurial ecosystem and business growth of the Upper Peninsula. Though we’ve grown throughout the years the mission remains the same, to support NMU students and faculty along with regional community members while providing a model for developing opportunities in the region.
About Invent@NMU Van Outreach Program:
As a Programs Assistant, you will play a crucial role in extending the reach of Invent@NMU's entrepreneurship services to rural areas of the Upper Peninsula. Within your role, a crucial responsibility will be supporting and planning outreach trips throughout the UP, and attending a variety of events to engage with community members. This outreach will be done from Invent@NMU’s mobile outreach van. You will have the opportunity to network, explain Invent@NMU's programs, give demonstrations, share success stories, and connect with entrepreneurs seeking to start or expand their businesses.
Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work well in both team-oriented and self-directed environments
- Effective student leader with marketing skills, confidence, and the ability to respond quickly and creatively to relevant events
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Interest in entrepreneurship and supporting local businesses
- Willingness to travel and attend events throughout the Upper Peninsula
- Knowledgeable or willingness to learn a variety of software platforms including;
- Google applications (Docs, Sheets, etc.)
- Website software such as WordPress, Wix, and GoDaddy
- Social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram
- Linktree
- Excellent organizational and time management skills are required, along with the willingness to learn
- Attention to detail, initiative, creativity, flexibility and proactive thinking are essential to drive the program’s innovative culture
- Currently enrolled student at Northern Michigan University
