The Breakthrough Teaching Residency is one of the most rewarding and rigorous experiences available to undergraduates in the county. Whether you have always dreamed of being in the classroom or are considering it for the first time, teaching at Breakthrough will help prepare you for a career in education while building skills that are transferable to any profession.  


 

Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia brings together passionate undergraduates from all majors to teach our motivated middle school students. As a Breakthrough teaching fellow, you will receive extensive training, continuous support, and the opportunity to lead a classroom. Throughout the summer, you will assume leadership roles and practice persistence, creativity, flexibility, and problem-solving. Under the guidance of experienced educators, you will work alongside other exceptional college students to plan and teach classes, manage a classroom, advise students, lead field trips, and develop as a teacher and leader.

As a teaching fellow, you will:

  • Complete 100+ hours of training.
  • Gain 75+ hours of teaching experience.
  • Learn to consistently engage 100% of students.
  • Teach a core academic course to multiple small classes.
  • Design and lead an enrichment course.
  • Step into leadership roles, such as chairing a committee.
  • Participate in daily department meetings to prepare and practice lessons.
  • Learn to give and receive constructive feedback regularly.
  • Thoughtfully plan, execute, evaluate, and evolve your work.


 

Breakthrough is seeking Teaching Fellows in Middle School math, science, literature, and writing for its 2025 summer academy.  Positions are available at Germantown Friends School.


 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work with students and teachers from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Excellent presentation, writing, and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and desire to work in mentorship relationships
  • Creativity, energy, and ability to exercise agility in educational environments


SCHEDULE 

  • April-June
    • Communication with Breakthrough Staff regarding pre-summer responsibilities


 

  • June 16th to August 15 th
  • A nine-week residency that includes two weeks of training, six weeks of teaching, and one week of wrap-up and evaluation.
    • June 16 - June 27: Orientation and Training
    • June 30 - August 8: Summer Program
    • August 11 - August 15: Wrap-Up and Evaluation 


 

  • An intensive daily schedule, which runs from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., five days a week.


 

COMPENSATION:

Teaching with Breakthrough is a paid opportunity. Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia offers a stipend of $5000 and a limited number of housing for non-local fellows at no cost.
