DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will assist both the enteric disease and vectorborne disease teams at the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Your main duty will involve conducting telephone interviews with patients diagnosed with enteric diseases, which will include routine follow-ups after reports of illness and interviews related to outbreak investigations. This role requires engaging with individuals affected by reportable illnesses, documenting relevant health information and exposures, and contributing to disease surveillance and outbreak response initiatives. If time allows, you will also interview cases of alpha-gal syndrome associated with mammalian meat allergies due to lone star tick bites. Additional tasks may involve database management, data entry, and participation in weekly team meetings, with potential opportunities to engage in special projects as time and interest allow. Furthermore, this role may entail emergency assignments to support the public health emergency response efforts of the Department of Health, which could be assigned with little notice and may last from a few hours to several weeks, potentially requiring travel to locations outside of your designated office.

Work Schedule and Additional Information: 
 

  • This internship position is 15 - 20 hours per week (20 is the maximum).
  • Work hours are flexible, Monday - Friday.
  • The internship will start in January 2025 and will continue for up to one year.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework,

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:
 

  • Current full-time enrollment in a bachelor's degree program or higher.
  • Good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher).
  • Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university.


Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Graduate students preferred.


Additional Requirements: 
 

  • You must possess a valid driver's license that is not under suspension.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
