Granville Township Fire Department EMT Training and Internship
This is a Denison Exclusive Internship. Graduating seniors do not qualify for
funding. Stipend support is provided through the Denison Internship Program
and the student is required to participate in the program. Reach out to Kati Bear

About the Granville Township Fire Department:
We are a combination department that consists of 13 career staff, 30 part time staff, 7
Paid-on-Call and 3-5 volunteers. The GTFD is a rural combination Fire Department
located in the heart of the Village of Granville. The GTFD also provides EMS, fire and
rescue services to McKean Township and Union Township with a combined population
of 13,700 and covers 72 square miles. In 2021 we responded to 2,050 calls for service.
We operate 2 ALS Medics, 1 Engine, 1 Ladder, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Tenders, 1 Brush
Truck, 1 Command Vehicle and 1 ATV out of one station.
Services provided are: Fire Suppression, Advanced Life Support EMS, Rescue, and
Fire Prevention/Education to the community.
Intern Program Description:
The GTFD Denison Internship Program will include training and on the job experiences
as an EMT. We are very fortunate to be partnering with DU in the creation and support
of this program. The GTFD has a 40+ year history of working with DU students in
various volunteer and paid roles. The internship is being created to tailor the training
and education to benefit the student that has medical or emergency medical ambitions.
The program will be highly competitive and only open to 1 student per summer.
What Is Provided:
• Housing through Denison (if necessary) and available sleeping quarters in our
firehouse while on duty. Please note that the student selected for this internship will still
need to apply for summer housing with Knowlton Center sponsorship.
• Eligibility for the Denison Internship Program Stipend and guaranteed coverage of
tuition for EMT-Basic Training
• Continued professional development and training opportunities
• Optional transition from internship to volunteer position. Opportunities for
fire/rescue training. Opportunity for Paid On-Call role if fire and EMS certifications are
obtained.
• GTFD has opportunity to send selected volunteers, POC and other staff to
Paramedic School (1-year program), if selected, will receive their Ohio Paramedic
License upon successful completion of the program and required National Registry
testing.

Our Expectations for Interns:
• Attend all scheduled GTFD training activities
• Completion of minimum Ohio and GTFD training requirements (provided by program)
• Work 8-, 12- or 24-hour shifts, as available during the summer
• On call to respond to major incidents when you are available
Full participation in the Denison Internship Program in collaboration with the
Knowlton Center for Career Exploration.
Application Requirements:
• Current Freshman or Sophomore
• A minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA at Denison
Interest in a Fire/EMS career or a health-related career (example: MD, nursing,
PA, etc)
• Applicants cannot currently have a valid EMT certification. This internship is for
students who have not participated in EMT training previously.

Interviews will be required of selected applicants, as well as a ride-along experience.
Work Schedule, Duties and Training
Our interns work 8, 12 or 24-hour shifts rotating based on availability. When not in
school, Interns can be on-duty at the station. Interns respond to all Fire and EMS calls
up to their level of training. Interns are also issued pagers (if available) and are on call
when off duty. During regular business hours Interns assist our full-time staff with
emergency response, public fire education, maintenance, cleaning, and other
tasks. Interns participate in regular shift fire and EMS daily, as well as periodic
supplemental training sessions.

In partnership with COTC: Learn all aspects of pre-hospital EMS including treatment
and transportation, nature and extent of injury/illness, and basic and advanced life-
saving skills – CPR, automatic external defibrillation and vehicle extrication. Additional
hours will be added for scheduled module testing. EMT National Registry testing will be
scheduled following each EMT session. The off-site written exam will be scheduled on-
line through NREMT. The practical exam will be scheduled at C-TEC during class. Must
meet course completion requirements to be eligible to take National Registry test. This
will prepare you for an entry-level position as an EMT. The EMT Program is 150 hours
