Tournament Media & Communications Internship

TOURNAMENT MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

 

The Alabama Golf Association is offering two 3-month USGA P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship positions focusing on Tournament Media & Communications designed to provide valuable hands-on experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration, media, public relations, or communications. 

 

Internship Dates

May 2025 – August 2025. Start/end dates are flexible. 

 

Intern Duties/Responsibilities

Qualified applicants will learn the internal operations of a State/Regional Golf Association. Some specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide communications support for AGA championships, Junior Golf Alabama and USGA qualifiers
  • Serve as staff photographer at championships and events
  • Assist with research, writing, fact checking, and proofing of content
  • Assistance with on-site and off-site concepting, creating, and publishing of content to web sites, photo galleries and social media sites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SmugMug)
  • Provide tournament coverage writing pre-event press releases, daily and post-tournament recaps
  • Distribute results to local and national media
  • Download and archive photographs on office server
  • Provide video coverage and player interviews during tournaments
  • Edit association yearbook following each event
  • Create championship highlight videos
  • Assist with marketing plan for AGA License Plate Campaign & Golf Travel in Alabama
  • Assist with Hole-in-One program
  • Assist with general tournament/golf course preparation and breakdown
  • Assist tournament operations staff as needed with starting and scoring of players, on-course rules officiating
  • Assist with concepting and implementing media coverage for the Southern Golf Association Championships (Southern Amateur and Southern Junior) and Elite Amateur Golf Series

 

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to live/work in the Birmingham, AL area during internship
  • Preferred area of study or background in journalism, social media, communications, or public relations
  • Strong work ethic with a “Can Do” attitude and willingness to learn
  • Highly motivated individual with ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Excellent news writing and editing skills that can work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Photography, videography, and photo/video editing experience a plus
  • Willingness to travel extensively within Alabama and to Louisiana & Tennessee (SGA Championships).
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors including early mornings and weekends
  • Preferred computer/software skills (i.e., Adobe Suite, Microsoft Word, Canva, MailChimp) and the ability to effectively communicate on the phone, via e-mail and through various web site and social media outlets
  • Golf background or strong interest in golf is a plus but not required
  • Have own transportation and valid driver’s license
  • Candidate must be an amateur golfer if applicable. PGM students are eligible. PGA professionals/apprentices are ineligible.

 

Salary and Compensation

  • $2,250 per month (medical and dental insurance available at additional cost)
  • All work-related travel expenses will be paid by the association (meals, lodging, mileage)
  • Staff clothing (Polo Ralph Lauren)

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 120 member clubs represented by over 28,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. A full-time professional staff of seven individuals handles day-to-day activities.

 

Based in Hoover (Birmingham suburb), the AGA is the USGA's Allied Golf Association in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the World Handicap System including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating, and Rules of Golf & Handicapping education. The AGA annually conducts 23 championships; team match competitions for men, women, junior and seniors; AHSAA high school golf championship and the SEC Men's Golf Championship. The AGA manages the Junior Golf Alabama program that is a joint venture between the AGA and Alabama-NW Florida PGA Section. 

 

In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Scholarship Fund through the Alabama Golf Foundation that is dedicated to assisting young golfers in higher education. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the SGA Board of Directors. AGA staff also administers day-to-day operations of the Elite Amateur Golf Series.
