Bachelor Level Social Work/Psychology/Criminal Justice Internship
Thank you for your interest in an internship at The Child Advocacy Center of Lapeer County. The CAC currently offers internships for Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters for bachelor level interns majoring in Health and Human Service fields. We require at least a 200-hour commitment for all interns. Schedules are flexible and based on the needs of the CAC and interns. Typically interns work 2 days a week between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm. Please note that all internships are unpaid.
The Child Advocacy Center works to give interns a wide range of experiences within their time at the center. This allows interns to develop a wider range of useful skills that they can take with them and use for their benefit regardless of where their path leads them. Interns shadow and work with each position at The Child Advocacy Center to understand how each staff member completes their part which all comes together to form an effective CAC team.
There are different roles the interns may explore during their internship.
• Family Advocacy: Examples of possible experiences include inputting caregiver/client surveys, preparing the building for forensic interviews, compiling resource packets, shadowing family interactions, providing supervision for children during forensic interviews, assisting with follow up calls, and other responsibilities as agreed upon.
• Prevention: Examples of possible experiences include assisting with social media posts, attending prevention programming in Lapeer schools, and assisting with the newsletter, events, and fundraising.
• Intake Coordination: Examples of possible experiences include observing database input, shadowing intake processes, and assisting with client folders.
• MDT Coordination: Examples of possible experiences include learning about the multidisciplinary team approach, attending and discussing case review, learning about data and outcome tracking, and attending any relevant MDT trainings.
• Therapy: Examples of possible experiences include making appointment reminder calls/texts, learning about the TF-CBT process, completing projects to assist in therapy activities, observing crisis counseling sessions, and other projects as agreed upon.
• SANE/SART Coordination: Examples of possible experiences include learning about sexual assault medical examinations, helping maintain the medical suite, preparing for clients, and shadowing advocacy sessions.
• Forensic Interviewing: Examples of possible experiences include reading the Michigan Forensic Interviewing Protocol, learning about the field of forensic interviewing, preparing the interview room, observing forensic interviews, and debriefing with the MDT following forensic interviews.
Through these varied experiences, the CAC hopes to give interns both a broad and specific overview of how a CAC works. The rotation schedule gives interns a chance to see how all these different positions come together to help children and their families heal from trauma.
Our internship process includes an interview with our internship supervisor to learn a little more about you and to discuss our program.
