RISE (Research Internship in Sustainable Bioenergy) is a summer internship program offering bioenergy research opportunities for undergraduates. This program builds the talent pipeline and is supported by the Department of Energy (CABBI), the National Science Foundation (ASAP, a Global Center), and Boeing.

Bioenergy research spans many disciplines so students interested in plant biology, agronomy, synthetic biology, genetics, environmental sciences, chemical engineering, and civil & environmental engineering are encouraged to apply.

Projects will be part of CABBI (the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation, DOE-funded) or ASAP (Alliance for Socially-acceptable and Actionable Plants, NSF-funded).

Participants will conduct a research project under the guidance of a CABBI or ASAP mentor. Projects are available at many CABBI or ASAP partner institutions across the country. In addition to a research project, a series of seminars are planned to expose participants to career options and develop skills in science communication and the process of applying to graduate school. Participants will be invited to attend a Science Planning Retreat and will present their work in a research symposium at the end of the summer.

Eligibility Requirements

Undergraduate student participants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States. Participants must have at least one semester of coursework remaining (after July 2025) before obtaining their bachelor's degree. By submitting an application you are hereby certifying that you meet all eligibility requirements for this program.
