GIS Technician

The City of Defiance is accepting applications for the position of GIS Technician. Under direction of the city Engineer will perform technical work relevant to developing, maintaining and deploying information required to support the City’s geographical information system (GIS). Applicants must have an associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, three years of experience working with GIS systems, and a valid driver’s license. The applicant must have an understanding of computer applications including the latest version of ESRI products and able to perform work outside in all weather conditions. This is a full-time position with a starting hourly range of $23.50 to $26.50.  Full benefits package including health, vision & dental insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, and enrollment in Ohio Public Employees Retirement System. 1. Create, maintain and update City GIS system ensuring accuracy of asset data displayed and make modifications to the data as required.
2. Assist with the preparation, reproduction and distribution of maps, spreadsheets, displays and other related documents for use at public and internal meetings.  
3. Assimilate City asset data from various sources including field notes, construction drawings, plats, legal descriptions, other database sources, etc and be able to evaluate and interpret information for use in maintaining and updating City GIS system.
4. Utilize global positioning system (GPS) equipment to collect asset information required to update City GIS system and be responsible for evaluating and inputting the collected data.
5. Compare field and office mapping to resolve incongruous information issues and utilize GPS systems or other field methods to gather data and verify the accuracy of the GIS data. 
6. Keep current knowledge of ArcGIS system commands and functions, coding methods, operation requirements, GIS standards and mapping standards.  
7. Provide instruction and training to staff in working with GIS software as required.
